Why do we chant “Amituofo”?

We chant “Amituofo” because Amitabha Buddha made 48 great vows to save all suffering beings. His 18th Vow promises that anyone who recites his name with sincere faith—even just ten times at the moment of death—can be reborn in the Pure Land and escape the endless cycle of suffering.

There are many powerful mantras and dharanis (神咒) in Buddhism, each with their own blessings and functions. But among them, “Amituofo” is one of the most powerful and accessible—because it’s the shortest, simplest, and most direct. It doesn’t require rituals, deep understanding, or perfect conditions—only a kind and pure heart.

In the beginning, you may or may not feel anything when chanting. That’s perfectly natural. The key is consistency and sincerity. Over time, as you gently master the practice—silently chanting “Amituofo” throughout your day with mindfulness and compassion—it becomes incredibly powerful. It will protect you, calm your mind, bring insight, and gradually dissolve confusion and suffering in your life.

To chant “Amituofo” is to link your mind with infinite light and life. It plants the seed of liberation, brings peace in this life, and opens the door to the Pure Land in the next.

What if I’m new, not religious, or struggling?

That’s okay. This path is open to everyone — especially those who are hurting. You don’t need to believe blindly. Start with one chant: Amituofo. Amitabha Buddha welcomes you with open arms.

Even if you're not in pain, Buddhism is a universal education—a profound path that reveals the true nature of life and the universe (诸法实相). By learning and practicing the Dharma, you can naturally improve your physical and mental health, develop greater wisdom, attract better fortune, create a more harmonious family life, extend your lifespan, and ensure a brighter future and rebirth—all without relying on blind belief.

What if I already have a religion?

It’s perfectly okay. Buddhism doesn’t ask you to convert or give up your faith. It’s not about converting — it’s about helping people live wiser, kinder, and more peaceful lives. Buddhism is not a religion, but an education that guides people toward wisdom and harmony. You’re welcome to learn from the teachings of the Buddha while continuing your current spiritual path. As Master Chin Kung said: "Your religion is like your family. Buddhism is like your teacher. You can have both. Buddhism is an education that helps you gain wisdom and live more peacefully."

Many people from different religious backgrounds find peace and clarity through Nianfo (chanting "Amituofo"), understanding of karma, and the Pure Land teachings — all without conflict. Amitabha Buddha’s compassion is universal. He welcomes all beings, regardless of background. Everyone is welcome to chant Amituofo, learn the teachings, and walk the Pure Land path — no matter where they come from.
