We highly recommend reading—or even reciting—this passage every day.
It serves not only as a guide, but as a mirror for self-reflection, a compass for daily conduct, and a torch illuminating the path to rebirth in the Western Pure Land.

In the Pure Land tradition, Great Master Yin Guang is revered as a modern patriarch whose teachings are clear, direct, and deeply transformative. His words speak to both monastics and laypeople, offering a complete guide to daily practice rooted in compassion, humility, and unwavering mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha.

One of his most beloved teachings is a concise list of principles for cultivating the right mind and right action, day in and day out. Below is a modern English rendering of this powerful passage, adapted with care for everyday application in our contemporary lives.

🫷 Master Yin Guang's Teaching (English Translation)

No matter your role—monk or layperson—practice reverence and harmony.
Respect those above you; be kind and gentle to those around you.

Endure what others cannot. Do what others dare not.
Take on burdens for others. Help them fulfill their good deeds.

In stillness, reflect on your own faults. In casual talk, never speak of others’ flaws.

Chant Amituofo

In all actions—walking, standing, sitting, lying down, dressing, and eating—
from dawn till dusk, and from dusk till dawn,
never let the recitation of Amituofo be interrupted.

Recite softly, or recite silently.
Other than the Buddha’s name, do not give rise to stray thoughts.
When wandering thoughts arise, cut them off at once.

Cultivate Humility

Always feel a sense of shame and repentance.
Even if your practice deepens, consider your efforts shallow.
Do not boast. Do not compare.

Focus on yourself, not others.
See only the good in others, not their faults.
Regard all people as Bodhisattvas. See yourself as the only ordinary being.

A Vow of Faith

If you can truly practice in this way,
you will be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
